Things to do in Annecy: canals, castle, lake and day trips

The short answer: walk the old town along the canals of the Thiou, see the Palais de l'Isle sitting in the middle of the water, climb up to the castle, then head to the lake via the Pont des Amours and the Jardins de l'Europe. That fills a relaxed morning on foot. With more time, get out on the lake by boat, cycle the lakeside path, or take in the view from the Semnoz or the Col de la Forclaz, where the paragliders launch.

Annecy is in Haute-Savoie, on a lake 14.6 km long and 27 km² in area, sitting at 447 m, according to the tourist office. It works all year: swimming and boat trips in summer, quiet walks in autumn and, in winter, a base for skiing in the Aravis, with La Clusaz 32 km and Le Grand-Bornand 30 km from Annecy railway station.

Below is what you need to plan your visit, with official opening times and prices as of October 2026, followed by guided tours you can book.

Guided tours and day trips in Annecy

These are Viator experiences in Annecy: one- and two-hour guided walks through the old town, a lakeside walk with a cruise, food tours, Segway rides and electric mountain biking. Each shows its price, duration and reviews; availability depends on the date.

The old town and the Thiou canals

The old town is why Annecy gets called the Venice of the Alps. It is crossed by the Thiou, the lake's natural outflow and one of the shortest rivers in France at around 3.5 km. In the Middle Ages it powered mills and workshops; today footbridges cross it between colourful arcaded houses.

The pleasure is in wandering: Quai de l'Île, the arcades of Rue Sainte-Claire and the Pont Morens. The tourist office counts five bell towers in the centre, including Saint-Pierre cathedral and the 15th-century church of Saint-Maurice. A footnote for literature fans: this is where a 16-year-old Jean-Jacques Rousseau met Madame de Warens at Easter 1728.

Palais de l'Isle and Annecy Castle

The Palais de l'Isle is the city's most photographed landmark: a 12th-century stronghold built on a rocky islet in the Thiou that went on to serve as a prison, courthouse and administrative centre, and has been a listed historic monument since 1900. Inside is an interpretation centre on local architecture and heritage.

Annecy Castle, home of the Counts of Geneva in the 13th and 14th centuries, keeps its 13th-century Queen's Tower. It now houses the castle museum, covering archaeology, fine art, contemporary art, natural history and ethnology, plus the regional observatory of Alpine lakes.

From October to May both open 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30, and entry is free on the first Sunday of each month. Check prices and the weekly closing day on the Annecy museums website before you go.

The lake: boat trips, swimming and cycling

The Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d'Annecy runs guided cruises of 1 hour on the Grand Lac (€19 adults, €13.50 ages 4-12), 1 hour 15 and 1 hour 30 on the Petit Lac to the south (€22 adults), from 1 March to 30 November. English commentary is available on board via a QR code. Worth knowing for autumn 2026: because the lake level has dropped sharply, sightseeing cruises have left from the Sévrier landing stage instead of Annecy harbour since 23 September.

Around ten beaches line the lake; on 7 October 2026 the water was 19.7°C, according to the tourist office. You can also hire paddleboards, kayaks and pedalos.

By bike, the voie verte cycle path runs 33 km almost flat along the west shore from Annecy to Marlens, and the full loop of the lake is about 40 km with 200 m of climbing.

  • From 14 September to 18 December 2026 the RD 909 A and a section of the cycle path near Talloires-Montmin are closed for works, so the full loop is not possible during that period.

Pont des Amours, the Pâquier and the Jardins de l'Europe

Three sights between the old town and the lake fit into one stroll. The Pont des Amours is an iron bridge from 1907 over the Vassé canal, the classic Annecy photo with boats moored beneath. It links the Pâquier, a 7-hectare lawn on the lakefront, once pasture and handed to the town in the 17th century on condition nothing was built on it, with the Jardins de l'Europe, an English-style park where 650 trees and more than 1,000 shrubs were already recorded in 1864.

Viewpoints and paragliding: the Semnoz and the Col de la Forclaz

The Semnoz is Annecy's own mountain. Its summit, the Crêt de Châtillon, is at roughly 1,700 m, with views over the lake, the Bauges and Aravis ranges and, on a clear day, Mont Blanc. It is around half an hour's drive from town.

Across the lake, above Talloires-Montmin, the Col de la Forclaz is an internationally known free-flight site. Together with Planfait it is one of the two classic take-offs for tandem paragliding flights, which land at Perroix or Doussard. The tourist office lists flights from €100 for adults and €85 for children (October 2026). Flights run all year, weather permitting.

Talloires, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and the lakeside castles

The east shore is the quieter side. The Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard has belonged to the same family for more than a thousand years, and the story goes that it inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. In 2026 it opens from 1 April to 12 November: daily 10:00 to 19:00 in July and August, and Friday to Sunday plus public holidays 13:00 to 18:00 the rest of the season, daily during the All Saints' holidays (17 October to 1 November). Tickets are €12 for adults and €6 for children.

Further south, the Château de Duingt on its peninsula opens only for occasional events. Talloires, below the Forclaz, makes a natural stop on a loop of the lake.

Annecy markets

The old town market runs on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 7am, with cheese, charcuterie and fruit from local producers; it is larger on Fridays and Sundays. On the last Saturday of each month, from 8am to 6pm, an antiques and flea market fills Rue Sainte-Claire and the surrounding streets.

Annecy in winter: a base for skiing at La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand

Plenty of skiers stay in Annecy and head up to the Aravis for the day. La Clusaz is 32 km from the railway station and Le Grand-Bornand 30 km, via the A41 Annecy Nord exit towards Thônes. By coach, lines 62/63 leave Annecy bus station and take between 1 hour and 1 hour 10 to La Clusaz in normal conditions; the resort also sells a lift pass bundled with the coach ticket.

For high mountains, Chamonix is about 100 km away, roughly 1 hour 15 by motorway (tolled). For a gentle day with children, the Semnoz has cross-country skiing and a small family ski area half an hour from town.

FAQ

How many days do you need in Annecy?

The old town, the Palais de l'Isle and the lakeside gardens are easily seen in half a day on foot. A full day adds the castle and a cruise; two or three days leave room for cycling round the lake, the Semnoz or Menthon castle.

Can you swim in Lake Annecy?

Yes, around ten beaches line the lake. In high summer some are supervised and charge for entry, so check each one with the tourist office.

Do the lake boats run out of season?

The Compagnie des Bateaux sightseeing cruises operate from 1 March to 30 November. In autumn 2026, because of the low lake level, they leave from Sévrier rather than Annecy harbour.

What can you do in Annecy when it rains?

The castle museum and the Palais de l'Isle are the obvious choice, and both are free on the first Sunday of the month from October to May. The arcades of Rue Sainte-Claire keep you dry while you browse.

Is Annecy a good base for skiing?

For the Aravis, yes: La Clusaz is 32 km and Le Grand-Bornand 30 km from Annecy station, with coach lines 62/63. Chamonix is about 100 km away.
