Types of lesson

Group lessons

In a group, by level, with a shared instructor. The cheapest option per hour, usually run as multi-day courses (a weekend or a week) of a few hours a day; each school sets the length and group size.

Private lessons

An instructor just for you or your group, by the hour. More expensive per hour but at your pace: the choice to progress fast, for a nervous first day or for a family with different levels.

Children

Schools group children by age and level. The youngest usually start in the snow garden before moving on to lessons; each school sets its minimum age.

Snowboard

Taught separately from skiing, with its own equipment. The first two days are the hardest; after that progress is quick.

What to check before choosing a school

  • Your real level: first day, already linking turns on green and blue runs, or polishing technique on reds and off-piste.
  • Dates: at Christmas, Easter and bank-holiday weekends groups and private instructors fill up first.
  • Meeting point and times: each school has its own, at the foot of the slopes or in the village.
  • Lessons do not include the lift pass or equipment: book them for the same days.
  • The instructor’s language, if you don’t speak the local one.
