Saas-Fee hotels: areas, lifts, SaastalCard and getting there

Saas-Fee is a car-free village at 1,800 m in the Saas Valley (Valais, Switzerland). Cars stay in the car park at the entrance and inside the village you get around on foot, by electric taxi or with your hotel’s luggage service. That is why, when choosing a hotel, what matters most is not the star rating but how many minutes’ walk it is from the lift you will use every morning, and from the PostBus stop if you arrive by public transport. Below are the areas of the village, the cheaper alternatives in the valley and what the guest card includes.

Key facts

Where to stay in Saas-Fee: three areas of the village

Saas-Fee is small and you can walk across it in about twenty minutes, but in ski boots with your skis on your shoulder those minutes add up. Decide first which lift you will start from, and look for a hotel around it.

  • Village entrance, by the car park and bus station: the easiest area for arriving and leaving, and the start of the Alpin Express, which goes up towards the glacier and Mittelallalin.
  • Upper village, towards the Spielboden, Längfluh and Hannig lift stations: the closest to the slopes. The official accommodation list lets you filter for places within 50 m of the snow (ski-in/ski-out).
  • Centre, around the Dorfstrasse: shops, restaurants, ski hire and most of the evening atmosphere, a few minutes’ walk from everything.

Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen: cheaper, and you can drive

In the other villages of the valley prices are usually lower and you can drive right up to the door. Saas-Grund has its own ski area, Hohsaas, with the Kreuzboden lift; Saas-Almagell has the Furggstalden area, aimed at families. From any of them you reach Saas-Fee by PostBus, and with the SaastalCard the PostBus across the whole valley is free. It is the best choice on a tight budget, or if you plan to ski several different areas of the valley.

The SaastalCard: what it includes

All guests of partner accommodation receive the SaastalCard from the first night. It includes unlimited use of the PostBus across the Saas Valley and discounts on attractions. On the cable cars it is valid on either the arrival or the departure day. It is not valid for the journey there and back by PostBus. Ask when you book whether your accommodation is a partner: it is what makes staying in Saas-Grund or Saas-Almagell practical.

Getting to Saas-Fee

By public transport, there are trains from Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Milan Malpensa airports to Visp, and from Visp the PostBus 511 leaves every half hour for Saas-Fee. It takes about three hours in total. By car, you come via Visp and Stalden; from the north you can take the Lötschberg car train between Kandersteg and Goppenstein, and from the south the Simplon pass or car train. You leave the car in the car park at the village entrance.

When to book, and packages with a lift pass

Christmas, New Year and the February school-holiday weeks fill up first, so for those weeks book months ahead. For the 2026/27 season the tourist office advertises the Sleep & Ski Deal: up to 30% off the lift pass when you book accommodation for 4 nights or more, with a Flexpass for 6 freely chosen ski days, the free ski bus and 25% off the Lötschberg car train. Check the package terms on the official website before booking your hotel.

Hotel or apartment

If you are a family or a group staying for a week, an apartment usually works out cheaper per person and lets you cook. For a short break, a hotel with half board saves time after skiing. Either way, look at the map before booking: in a car-free village, the distance to the lift counts more than anywhere else.
